Image Recognition And Image Processing

What Are Image Recognition And Image Processing?

One of the popular things today is image recognition in image processing. So now, in this article, we will see the definition of both.

The Image Recognition

Image recognition is the process of recognizing an object or pattern in an image. It is much like human recognition.

Image processing is the technique of the following:

  • Modifying,
  • filtering, or
  • enhancing digital pictures,
  • mainly by improving the quality of the picture

Image processing could also involve changing the resolution or applying filters to make it look much better. Image recognition is considered image processing. Now you must be thinking about how image recognition is done by computers?

So here’s how it works! A computer system reviews millions of images that are stored in its memory banks.

The computer compares each image with the other stored images using similarity measures and then ranks them according to similarity. The result will be a ranked list of similar objects present in both images.

Image Recognition In Image Processing Concept

Image recognition is nothing but identifying objects or patterns in an image. It is by comparing it with other images which are stored in its memory banks.

The main aim of this process is to improve the ability of computers. To identify things over time without human guidance.

For example, if you want to recognize a face in an image, then your computer will compare that face with all other faces. Then it will provide you results based on their similarities.

It can be said that this process is similar to human recognition. It is because humans also recognize things based on their similarities with other things.

The image Processing concept is different from other concepts related to computer vision. Why? It is because it refers mainly to digital images which are processed by computers.

So these are already available in memory banks of computers, rather than taken from outside sources.

Image processing can be used for many purposes.

Such as improving picture quality by enhancing colors and removing noise from pictures, changing the size and resolution of pictures, and so on.

Since there are many kinds of image processing techniques available for different purposes. However, we will discuss only those techniques which are commonly used.

Such as scaling and resizing, contrast enhancement and edge detection, etc.

Scaling And Resizing

Image scaling is the process of changing the size of an image. Scaling can be done either by changing its resolution or its size.

Image resizing is the process of changing the size of an image. Resizing can be done either by changing its resolution or its size.

Resizing and scaling are two common techniques used in image processing. It is because most of the images we come across in our daily life are not in the required sizes.

Such as a picture of your friend which you would like to post on social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Flickr, etc., it would look better if it was resized to a smaller size.

Contrast Enhancement

Contrast enhancement is the process of increasing the brightness and sharpness of an image. It can be done by using different methods such as gamma correction and histogram modification.

Edge Detection

Edge detection is the process of finding edges in an image. An edge can be defined as a change in intensity or color across an image.

So this means that if there is a white line on a black background.

Then it would be considered as an edge. Edge detection can be used for many purposes such as object removal, image segmentation, etc. It is because edges are useful for performing such operations.
